In 1989, Master Sheng Yen began to plan the founding of this solemn monastery for the future development of Buddhism and education of Buddhist talents in Taiwan. The construction was completed in October, 2005, and the monastery was named Dharma Drum Mountain because the topography of the mountain resembles a huge drum leveled on the ground.
The buildings of brown, grey, and white merge naturally with the surroundings, displaying the tranquility, stability, and vitality of Buddhism in harmony with Nature.
The main goals of the monastery, which enshrines Guanyin as the main deity, are culture, education, purification of the mind, and concern for the whole human race, for the purpose of enhancing peacefulness of the world.
