Sanzhi is the place to see the earliest-blooming sakura (cherry trees) in Taiwan.

The district office began planting cherry trees along township roads in 1996. From February to mid March every year, over ten thousand cherry trees bloom along the “cherry blossom roads” which are 70 kilometers long in total, and creating a lovely scene.

While different varieties of cherry have been planted (Tokyo cherry, Oshima cherry, Showa cherry, Kwanzan cherry, Double flowered ‘Prunus campanulata’ and the Formosan cherry), the main type is the native Formosan cherry tree.
