The north coast is rocky in some parts and sandy in others. The rocky coast has “wind-cut trees” caused by the seasonal winds while the plants on the sandy coast are mainly creeping plants with long roots. Guanyinshan has bamboo forests and sakura cherry blossoms bloom in spring. The green bamboo shoots grown on Guanyinshan are delicious and well worth trying. When spring turns to summer the mountain is covered in a sea of orange yellow acacia flowers. Migratory birds, with more than ten species seen in Guanyinshan, including the brown shrike, are another distinctive feature of the area; therefore, Guanyinshan is an excellent place for bird watching. A raptor watching festival is also held annually on Guanyinshan from April through May.
