Sustainable Tourism

The North Coast and Sustainable Tourism

Sustainable Tourism

"Sustainable Tourism" is different from the more commonly heard cultural tourism, eco-tourism, low-carbon tourism and business travel. Sustainable tourism is not a specific tourism model, but it adopts appropriate management measures for various tourism impacts, to achieve a balance between the ecological environment, social culture and community economy.

What we can do is try to reduce the impact of traveling on the environment and society, and promote the economic development of tourist destinations. For example, through sustainable management, local/tourist operator guidance, tourist behavior guidance etc., we can protect the natural environment and maintain biodiversity, respect the social culture and values of the local community, create community employment and economic income opportunities. This approach also brings benefits to the local community, so residents, businesses, the tourism industry, and management units work together to achieve sustainability.

Sustainable Tourism Vision for North Coast and Guanyin Mountain
Maintain the mountain and sea resources of the Crown Coast,
as well as the ancient and beautiful countryside,
while gradually building a sustainable scenic area
Policy Objectives

We will formulate sustainable tourism policies for the North Coast and Guanyinshan National Scenic Area based on global green (sustainable) tourism destination certification.

Destination Management
  • Established the "North Coast and Guanyin Mountain National Scenic Area Sustainability Implementation Group" to promote sustainable tourism within the jurisdiction
  • The overall tourism development plan is reviewed every 10 years, including an asset management inventory and destination management policies
  • Set a tourist capacity upper limit at important scenic spots, establish a "smart tourism info" service and implement destination tourist management
  • Organize limited seasonal events in the off-season to balance the number of visitors
  • Develop a code of behavior for visitors and strengthen awareness on the official website, social platforms and tour guides
Nature and Landscapes
  • Implement destination nature protection in accordance with central nature conservation regulations
  • Cultivate private sector resources and promote local independent action to conserve natural resources
Climate and Environment
  • Cooperate with Taiwan’s 2050 net-zero roadmap to protect the environment at tourism destinations
  • Establish regulations for large-scale exhibitions and performance events to require vendors to control event volume and lighting so as to minimize environmental impact
  • Choose appropriate lighting fixtures at scenic spots and turn off regularly to save energy and reduce environmental interference
  • Equipping less lighting fixtures to maintain nighttime ecology.
  • Implement sewage treatment through sewage treatment plants and septic tank facilities
  • Regulate OT and leasing companies to set up oil filter tanks and use cleaning products with environmental protection labels to reduce the potential for environmental pollution
  • Each visitor center is equipped with classification trash cans to promote trash classification and reduction, resource recycling and reuse
  • The staff restaurant counts the number of diners each day to effectively control ingredients and avoid leftovers
  • Provide online travel information using QR codes, encourage double-sided photocopying, and use electronic documents to reduce paper consumption
  • Integrate electric vehicle charging stations, public bicycles, Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Services, official car sharing etc. to promote green transportation
  • Establish electricity-saving and water-saving facilities, solar photovoltaic panels, and record energy usage to reduce energy consumption
  • Leisure facilities are planned to avoid environmentally sensitive areas, and take environmental adaptation actions such as reducing facilities and improving base water conservation
  • Install water-saving devices in toilets to record water consumption and improve water use conditions
Culture and Tradition
  • Incorporate tangible/intangible cultural assets into event itineraries to promote local cultural heritage
  • Cultural marketing and promotion events should protect and respect community intellectual property rights
  • Subsidize non-governmental organizations for cultural preservation events
Social Welfare
  • Basic service facilities are planned and improved with friendliness, universal and handicapped accessibility as planning goals
  • The official website has special tourism sections for "Handicapped Accessibility," "Seniors" and "Muslims" where information is provided on universal service facilities
  • Local residents, communities, agencies and other stakeholders are invited to participate during engineering project planning, design and construction stages
  • Hire local residents or form a patrol team to jointly monitor local resources and provide tour guide services.
  • When organizing large-scale events, cooperate with residents and businesses to launch a "Taiwan ask me" service that enables residents to participate in local tourism development
  • Conduct resident satisfaction surveys and incorporate results as a reference for management policies and plans
  • Prepare to promote the "Crown Coast" and cultivate the sustainable management capabilities of local enterprises
  • For official needs or organizing events, priority is given to purchasing local sustainable products
  • Promote in-depth local experiences and encourage low-carbon and sustainable tourism through cross-industry integration
  • Assess water features in the jurisdiction, and plan suitable water activities at beach scenic spots and areas where the water is relatively safe
  • Develop contingency, water safety and other related plans to maintain the safety of tourists at scenic spots within the jurisdiction
