The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Gold Awards announced its 2023 Gold Awards winners on August 24, 2023. Northguan Scenic Area Administration won the "Sustainable Development and Social Responsibility Category - Tourism Destination Resilience (Asia Pacific)" Gold Award with its "Alabao Bay Secret Land Reappearance Plan (Heping Island Geopark Secret Land)."
"Heping Island Geopark Secret Land-Alabao Bay" is known to have "the most beautiful sunrise in the world." It is operated and managed by the Northguan Scenic Area Administration and a local team based on "sustainable tourism." The park is open for a limited time during the stable season (May to September), allowing tourists to experience the beautiful scenery of Alabao Bay. Efforts are also being made to develop Heping Island further as an "international sustainable tourism island".
The Tourism Bureau is committed to promoting the optimization of the tourism environment, by paying more attention to the balance between tourism and local ecology. Through environmental education, it allows domestic and foreign tourists to understand the area and its history better. It also builds communication bridges by participating in various types of international organizations, so Taiwan's efforts and achievements at tourism development have been widely recognized, building up the nation’s reputation for tourism.
