Since more than 600 Okinawans used to live on Heping Island, making it the largest and oldest Okinawan settlement, this winter, Heping Island Park and Okinawa Industry Promotion Public Corporation will hold “Okinawa X Heping Island, a cross-island festival from December 26, 2020 to March 15, 2021. A series of events will take place to strengthen ties between Heping Island and Okinawa, such as an exhibition on both islands’ culture and history, an Okinawan food and farm product market, Heping Island tours, “sanshin” musical experiences, and traditional Okinawan dessert workshops. The Tourism Bureau, MOTC in Osaka also sent Okinawan people’s longings and best wishes a while ago. Although traveling in Okinawa is not possible due to COVID-19, it is fairly easy to visit Heping Island and enjoy the stories shared by the two islands.
