"Jinshan Sulfuric Fire Fishing Culture Exhibition" Passing on Tradition, Showcasing a Century-Old Fishing Method

8/19 to 9/30, 09:00-17:00, first floor of Jinshan Visitor Center

Jinshan’s local cultural and historical researchers note that in recent years, sulfuric fire fishing has almost disappeared and there is only one sulfuric fire fishing boat remains. “Sulfuric Fire Fishing” is an intangible part of the cultural heritage of New Taipei City and the exhibition seeks to facilitate interactions with the public. Fishing with a torch was first undertaken more than 300 years ago when it was discovered that Sulphur stone combined with water creates acetylene gas leading to the "Sulfuric Fire Fishing Method" unique to the north coast of Taiwan. When the acetylene is ignited there is a loud “bang” that causes thousands of sardines to leap out of the sea, ensuring “Sulfuric Fire Fishing” spread like wildfire.

This year, The Northguan National Scenic Area and a local travel agency introduced a Sulfuric Fire Fishing-themed tour, which allows visitors to better appreciate and visit Huanggang Fishing Village and an ancient fishing road, where they can experience this almost lost tradition of DIY sulfuric fire fishing.
