Jinshan-Wanli Hot Spring Festival

Jinshan-Wanli Hot Spring Festival

Festival Info

  • Date:October to December
  • Venue:Jinshan District and Wanli District

Jinshan-Wanli hot springs are on the Datun Mountain geothermal belt. The natural spring water and geothermal sights attract many visitors who come to soak in the hot springs in winter. The springs of Jinshan and Wanli are of different characteristics but with the same skin moistening, blood-circulation enhancing, and skin whitening effects. Enjoying a soak in a hot spring bath while taking in the sea views is a uniquely enjoyable experience. Soaking in a steaming hot spring bath in the cold winter wind is one of life’s real pleasures.

Jinshan Hot springs

Jinshan Hot springs

No other district on the coast has more hot springs than Jinshan. Most of the hot springs are sulfurous. In the days when the area was the home of the Katagalan people, sulfur was extracted here, and to this day, old sulfur quarry remains can be seen all over the township. Well-known Sihuangping and Genziping produced a large amount of sulfur in days gone by.

Both Sihuangping and Genzping were important sulfur and white earth production areas in earlier times. Today quarrying has ended, but the marks left by extraction over many decades remain, and many places where the earth surface was dug away have become sulfur vents and are, moreover, also some of the most precious sulfur outcrops of the Datun Mountain group’s sulfurous hot springs. However, the water is too hot, the ground is unstable, and the land belongs to a private company, so the water is supplied to only a few hot spring hotels, and cannot be turned into open-air hot springs that the public can enjoy. However, the existence of these sulfur outcrops proves that Jinshan’s hot springs are natural hot springs.

Wanli Hot springs

Like Yangmingshan’s hot springs, Wanli hot springs belong to the Datun volcano group. The water characteristics can be divided into neural carbon dioxide springs, acidic sulfurous springs, alkaline sulfurous springs, and white sulfur spring. Jiatoushe was the place hot springs were first discovered in the area, but the hot spring area, despite being very close to Jinshan, are actually in Wanli District, leading many people to mistakenly believe that Jiatoushe’s hot springs are “Jinshan hot springs” when in fact they are “Wanli hot springs”.

“Jiatou” is the old name of the village in Katagalan language. Geothermal water can be seen bubbling to the surface all over the village. The Katagalan people found that the water could be used to treat wounds and skin disease so they established a village here. After Han settlers arrived in Taiwan, more importance was attached to the medicinal properties of the local spring water. When the Japanese took control of Taiwan, these lovers of hot springs quickly began to actively develop the hot spring resources here.

Apart from the open-air hot springs, Wanli also has a lesser known hot springs area, Huangtan Village, located along the middle-lower reaches of Huang Creek. The village has small hot spring outcrops that, although not very big, are sufficient to prove enough hot water for the use of local residents and visitors. There are no high-class hot spring cabins here but there is warm service that makes you feel at home. Next time you feel like a hot spring soak, Huangtan Village, surrounded by mountains, is a good choice.
