The 2025 Formosa North Coast Arts Festival Begins! “The Tale of Driftwood” Explores the Vision for Symbioses Between Men and Nature

Let Art Ride the Waves and Speak for the Environment, Shaping a Sustainable North Coast with Artistic Charm
The “2025 Formosa North Coast Arts Festival,” guided by the Tourism Administration (of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications), hosted by the Northguan Scenic Area Headquarters, and organized by the renowned Ju Ming Museum, will run from July 18 to September 28, 2025. The festival will be combined with the various art and cultural events and creations held/made by the Taipei Branch (of the Agency of Rural Development and Soil and Water Conservation, Ministry of Agriculture) (hereinafter referred to as “the Taipei Branch”) and Cultural Affairs Department (of the New Taipei City Government) to provide visitors with an immersive art and tourism experience in the North Coast. The opening ceremony of the 2025 Formosa North Coast Arts Festival, held on July 19, featured numerous VIPs, regional curators, and participating artists who gathered at the Ju Ming Museum and drew nearly 3,000 visitors, all of whom witnessed this grand celebration of nature, art, community, and culture.

The 2025 Formosa North Coast Arts Festival: “The Tale of Driftwood” Reimagining Natural Memory and Artistic Practice
Now in its third year, the Formosa North Coast Arts Festival adopts the theme “the tale of driftwood” in 2025, aiming to showcase the traces of natural forces and their poetic connections to human culture. The goal is to promote the North Coast as a sustainable international cultural tourism model. This year, the Ju Ming Museum was invited as the main festival organizer, while artists and local teams were invited as regional curators to, based on the natural landscapes and cultural context of the North Coast, plan an exhibition that integrates land art, community co-creation, and educational activities.

Artists used driftwood as their primary material to create large-scale landscape installations and re-create bus stops. The main exhibition area features eight large-scale landscape installation art, located in both the Ju Ming Museum and Baisha Bay areas, along with four redesigned bus stops along Provincial Highway 2. In addition, three community-based co-creation landscape art pieces (coordinated by the Taipei Branch) at the Songshan Terraced Fields, Zhongliao Village, and Sansheng Trail will later be connected to the aforementioned art to form an “art line.” By using mountains and seas, the exhibition will tell the story of the interactions between nature and communities, inviting visitors to experience, through their five senses, the historical and ecological significance embodied in driftwood.

This year’s Formosa North Coast Arts Festival aims to create an art-based “action plan” where nature and culture converge through driftwood art, art camps, workshops, and educational activities, bringing together the creative potential of museums, communities, natural landscapes, and schools. Guided by a nature-based mindset that transcends urban boundaries, connects regional spaces with domestic and international art and cultural groups, and establishes a collaborative platform, the event organizer reinvents the North Coast into a creative venue, sparking deeper reflections among visitors on environmental protection and cultural regeneration.
