Protecting Shimen’s spring wonder - Laomei Green Reefs, patrol is in place

The spring (April and May) is the best time in a year to visit Laomei Green Reefs in Shimen. But to stay safe, visitors should avoid walking on or jumping in between the reefs, since the reefs are slippery and watery. In fact, by gathering up zealous locals, authorities in charge, and a few private groups, the Administration already founded the Laomei Green Reef Volunteer Patrol Team in 2016. And starting in this year (2021), with representatives from the National Property Administration and Coast Guard Administration, from March 1 to May 31, on-site patrol will be in place, along with broadcast announcements. These personnel will explain to visitors why they should not step on the reefs and persuade them to abide by the rules. It is hoped that the visitors can help to keep the reefs intact while appreciating these beautiful formations.

The Administration noted that, while Laomei Green Reefs are not located in a conservation area, if any visitor refuses to leave after trespassing and thus brings damage to the place, the authority in charge may issue a cash punishment between NT$30,000 and NT$100,000 to the visitor, based on the standard for punishment in Article 62 of the Act for the Development of Tourism.
