Sanzhi is the place to see the earliest-blooming sakura (cherry trees) in Taiwan. More than 16,000 cherry trees are grown in Sanzhi. The Cherry Blossom Trail, extending as far as 70 kilometers along Qingshang Road, is highly popular among visitors seeking cherry flower views. Every spring, when the weather turns warm after a chilly winter, all kinds of cherry flowers - bellflower cherry, Taiwan cherry, and Yoshino cherry - bloom one after another along the way, lasting up to two months. February and March is said the best time of a year for watching cherry blossoms in Sanzhi. Be sure to visit the road during early spring for the blooming season is short.

Varieties of cherry trees have been planted

The district office began planting cherry trees along township roads in 1996. From February to mid March every year, over ten thousand cherry trees bloom along the “cherry blossom roads” which are 70 kilometers long in total, and creating a lovely scene.

About Sakura

While different varieties of cherry have been planted (Tokyo cherry, Oshima cherry, Showa cherry, Kwanzan cherry, Double flowered ‘Prunus campanulata’ and the Formosan cherry), the main type is the native Formosan cherry tree.
