The North Coast and Guanyinshan National Scenic Area Headquarters (hereafter referred to as “Northguan Scenic Area Headquarters”) under the Tourism Administration, Ministry of Transportation and Communications has been honored with “The 13th Taiwan Landscape Awards (2025)” for its project titled “Shuangwan Bikeway Connection: Guzhuang Village Section Construction .” This achievement highlights the successful creation of a scenic and aesthetically refined coastal cycling route along Taiwan’s North Coast. Located in the coastal area at the mouth of the Balian Stream River in Guzhuang Village, Sanzhi District, New Taipei City, the construction project adopted a “low-impact” design approach to minimize ecological disturbance. This allows cyclists to immerse themselves in both the natural and cultural beauty of the North Coast. Since its completion, the route has quickly become a romantic hidden gem and a must-visit destination for cycling enthusiasts.
Overcoming the challenges posed by coastal sandy terrain and complex topography, the project team successfully constructed a 1-kilometer elevated bikeway. This new structure replaces the previously deteriorated wooden walkway, which had suffered from long-term sea salt corrosion, and features reinforced structure capable of withstanding the strong northeast monsoon winds. It also resolves a long-standing discontinuity in the route—unconnected since the completion of the Datianliao section in 2018—by linking the Balian Stream estuary. As a result, the final stretch connecting the Linshan Cape Boardwalk at Baisha Bay to Qianshui Bay Seaside Park has been completed, allowing visitors to freely and leisurely explore the North Coast’s beautiful scenery. The bikeway network seamlessly integrates Provincial Highway No. 2, coastal trails, and rural lanes, forming a continuous and richly layered tourism corridor. Given the presence of valuable native ecosystems in the surrounding area, including exposed sandbanks, conglomerates, and coastal vegetation such as pandanus and sea hibiscus, the project strictly adhered to low-impact principles during both its planning and construction stages. This ensured the preservation of ecological balance while allowing visitors to experience the natural coastal landscape up close.
According to the Northguan Scenic Area Headquarters, the region has long been renowned for its magnificent ocean views and diverse recreational resources. Starting from the northernmost scenery at Fugui Cape Lighthouse, visitors can enjoy charming seaside cafés along the coast as well as the unique rock formations of Yehliu Geopark for a rich, multi-dimensional travel experience. They can also cycle along the coastline where the sea meets the sky, stroll along sandy beaches, enjoy breathtaking sunsets, and appreciate the changing beauty of the seasons. With the completion of the Shuangwan Bikeway, the North Coast is becoming an internationally recognized destination that combines ecological sustainability with high-quality leisure experiences. Travelers from around the world are warmly invited to explore this coastal corridor, where nature, culture, and romantic imagery come together in harmony.
