World Oceans Day: Cleaning the North Coast as a part of a “charity tour”

In conjunction with the Year of Bay Tourism and in response to the UN’s World Oceans Day of June 8, the North Coast and Guanyinshan National Scenic Area Administration under the Tourism Bureau, MOTC held three ocean and beach cleaning events on June 6 and 9 at Baisha Bay and Heping Island Park. The events were held as a part of the government’s environmental education effort. Aiming to “get rid of plastics quickly,” the organizer called for charity groups, public agencies, and schools to take part in the events, while promoting the idea of a “charity tour” together.

On June 6, about 120 teachers and students of the Taipei European School and 200 more from New Taipei Municipal DanFeng High School, as well as zealous volunteers, gathered at Baisha Bay to clean the beach. “Oh Bear,” Tourism Bureau’s mascot, went to the site to cheer for the participants, making it as flamboyant as a carnival. Regardless of nationality, these attendants showed their love for oceans through their acts. The students especially learned to protect the environs. After the cleaning, a guided tour was held. The participants visited the Administration’s leisure and exploration center and the multimedia room.

During the three cleaning events, nearly 1,000kg of manmade wastes, most of which plastics such as floats, fishing gear, and plastic bags (60%), followed by plastic bottles, were collected. These events respond well to the 2018 World Oceans Day themes, such as preventing plastic pollution and building healthy ocean environs. The Administration noted that a “charity tour” should include volunteering and learning. Led by educational teams on environmental protection and participated by members of the public, more such tours will be held in the future for people to explore Taiwan through a different lens. The Administration hopes to raise people’s awareness of ocean conservation and waste reduction. Finally, it will keep promoting the “limited use of plastics” policy and invite people to “reduce the use of plastics” in everyday life, eventually creating a “plastics-free” world.
