As spring breezes sweep across Taiwan’s North Coast, this once-a-year dreamlike landscape makes its return. Located in Shimen District, New Taipei City, the Laomei Green Reef has now entered its prime viewing period. Vast stretches of vibrant green sea algae blanket neatly aligned stone troughs, shimmering against the deep blue ocean to create a natural wonder resembling a matcha-green carpet. The spectacle draws photographers and travelers eager to witness the scene. To promote local tourism with special features, the North Coast and Guanyinshan National Scenic Area Headquarters (hereafter referred to as the “Northguan Scenic Area Headquarters”) has arranged for volunteers to provide guided explanations of the green reef landscape on-site during daily low tide periods from March through mid-May. Visitors are invited to seize the opportunity for a spring North Coast getaway.
The Northguan Scenic Area Headquarters noted that the Laomei Green Reef is an extraordinary coastal erosion formation of the North Coast. Originally formed from volcanic rock layers, the grooves were sculpted over time by relentless wave erosion. Each year, from approximately March to May, the surface of the stone troughs becomes covered with a layer of bright green sea lettuce (Ulva lactuca) , creating a transitory yet dazzling natural scene. Recent stable weather and ample sunshine have fostered healthy algae growth, with coverage reaching roughly 50%, making this the ideal time for sightseeing and photography. In the early morning, sunlight slants across the green reef and the sea, producing striking layers of color; this is widely regarded by photographers as the “golden hour” of photography. Many visitors remark, “It’s even more breathtaking in person than in photos!” The gentle spring breeze further enhances the comfortable and relaxing atmosphere.
To preserve the natural ecosystem and maintain tourism quality, the Northguan Scenic Area Headquarters urges visitors not to step on the green reef, as doing so may damage the fragile natural landscape and pose a slipping hazard. Visitors are also advised to wear non-slip footwear, be mindful of wet and slippery coastal surfaces, avoid visiting during high tide, and pay attention to on-site safety announcements. As maintaining the coastal environment is no easy task, the public is encouraged to practice civic responsibility by not littering and working together to protect this beautiful shoreline.
The Laomei Green Reef is a naturally formed phenomenon, and the algae-covered season lasts only a few short weeks. Visitors planning a trip to the green reef are advised to check the Shimen District tidal forecast online in advance and arrive within one to two hours before or after low tide. Alternatively, they may use real-time images of the green reef available on the Northguan Scenic Area Headquarters official website for checking current conditions. As parking in the Laomei area is limited, visitors are suggested to take public transportation (i.e., Bus 862 or 863, or the Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Crown Northern Coast Line) and get off at Laomei Stop, followed by a 5- to 10-minute walk to the site. In addition to admiring the green reef, visitors can explore nearby attractions such as the Fugui Cape Lighthouse, the northernmost point of Taiwan’s main island; Fuji Fishing Harbor; Shimen Wedding Plaza; and coastal walking trails. Visitors can also savor fresh seafood and Shimen’s famous rice dumplings. The Laomei Green Reef is a springtime-only spectacle—miss it, and you will have to wait another year. The North Coast’s green miracle awaits your visit. For more event and travel information, please visit the Northguan Scenic Area Headquarters official website or fang page.
