Acknowledged by the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act, Yehliu Geopark becomes the North Coast’s first heritage geopark

With its unique geoscapes, Yehliu Geopark has been famous around the globe. It is also an important tourism and geological resource in Taiwan. Last year, the New Taipei City Government passed a proposal based on the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act, and formally listed Yehliu Geopark as a heritage geopark. The Council of Agriculture under the Executive Yuan acknowledged such a proactive act and offered a medal to the Administration on April 14 at a municipal meeting in New Taipei City.

The Administration noted that, after the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act was amended, it requested the Agriculture Department, New Taipei City Government to set Yehliu Geopark as a heritage site in the “natural landscape” category in 2018. After more than two years, in December 2020, the Natural Landscape and Natural Monument Review Committee, New Taipei City Government finally agreed without dissent that Yehliu Geopark would be the North Coast’s first heritage geopark according to the Cultural Heritage Preservation Act - and Taiwan’s seventh. With the act and the city government’s acknowledgement, people are encouraged to learn more about the importance of Yehliu’s geoscapes. In this way, Yehliu’s world-class landscapes shall be well protected by the law. The Administration will keep promoting Yehliu Geopark in the future, and make it the best tourist destination home and abroad.
