Shimen Kite Park

Audio Guide

The North Coast and Guanyinshan National Scenic Area built this first kite-themed park in Taiwan in 2006.

Blown by ocean winds all year round, Shimen District of New Taipei City is the best site for flying kites in Southeast Asia. The popular Taiwan International Kite Festival is held here. Outstanding kite players home and abroad gather up here annually for the grand occasion, with tens of thousands of audience members. The sky of Shimen is beautifully adorned by colorful kites during festival time. Other than the exciting kite-flying event, all sorts of fun adventure games and cultural tours about kites are held. While kite-flying is a rather old-fashioned, simple form of entertainment, it brings people close to the sky. Be sure to fly a kite in Shimen to feel the joy of chasing winds and be touched by the sensation of flying.

Fun Facts

    How to fly a kite?

    1. Before flying a kite, you need to find out the wind direction (you can do it by watching flags nearby or where the smoke goes).
    2. Grab the string and run against the wind. When the wind is strong enough to support the kite, slow down your pace and gently release more sections of the string.
    3. When encountering light wind, quickly pull the string back and forth several times to create more air flow for the kite. Release more sections of the string if you feel the wind pulling your kite. If the kite starts to fall, pull the string back.
