Held on January 15 in the lunar calendar, Yehliu Port Purification Festival has been around for more than a century. It is one of the few officially registered folk cultural assets in Taiwan and equally famous with the sky lantern festival of the North and the bee cannons of the South. The purification festival is characterized by “coming from the water and leaving through fire.” The rites include “patrolling oceans,” “full ships of harvests,” “deities purifying the port,” and “deities crossing fire.” The century-old religious event is one and only in Taiwan.
